Tailwheel endorsement

If you were learning to fly in the 40's and 50's, this would not be a big deal, as it was the only choice you had! Nose wheel trainers have only been around since 1956.

The tailwheel endorsement is useful for several reasons, many aerobatic and sport aviation aircraft are taildraggers thus require the rating should you want to fly them. From a work point of view, a tailwheel endorsement is required should you wish to build your aviation experience as a fire spotter for CALM in their Piper Cubs or work as an agricultural pilot. The rating will take you about 7 hours of dual instruction and will cover the differences in ground handling, takeoff and landing between nosewheel and tailwheel.

The need for precise rudder control will contribute to a marked improvement in your aircraft handling skills and your feel and judgement for flying. Understanding of terms such as wheelers, ground loops, swing and sideslip will give you a whole new appreciation of those who learned to fly before you, and a huge sense of achievement when you complete your endorsement.
